26 Apr The laparoscopic nephrectomy for living donor kidney transplantation program is being continued with great success at the G.H.A. “Evangelismos”
One more successful laparoscopic nephrectomy for living donor kidney transpalnation (spouse to spouse) was concluded at the 1st Surgery Clinic & Organ Transplantation Unit of the G.H.A. “Evangelismos”, thus increasing the number of successful kidney transplantation utilizing the laparoscopic method. The breakthrough for Greek Meical records laparoscopic removal of the renal graft was concluded on April 7th by Dr Vasileios Drakopoulos, assisted by Dr Nikolaos Roukounakis. The renal graft, after its removal from a woman aged 48, was transplanted to her spouse, aged 57, by the Clinic’s Director, Dr Vassilis Vougas, and the Clinic’s Coordinating Director, Dr. Spyros Drakopoulos. The procedure was impeccably supported by the Anaesthesiology, the Immunology and the Nephrological Departments, as well as the Nursing staff and the Transplant coordinating Unit, led by Dimitrios Pistolas & Aikaterini Balaska.
The donor exited the hospital the 3rd post-operative day in excellent general condition & renal function, while the recipient is expected to exit the Hospital soon, in full mobility.
The laparoscopic removal of renal grafts – which began in Greece by Dr Vasileios Drakopoulos solely at the Organ Transplantation Unit of the G.H.A. “Evangelismos’ in February 2015 – is crucial for the increase of living donors in our country. The success of the method lays in the safety of the kidney transplant procedure, which ensures excellent renal function to the recipient, as well as fast recovery to the donor.
